Changing lanes....

I was driving to work, during which I have to cross the (newly installed) traffic light at Cyber Towers, and was very pleasantly surprised to see all vehicles for whom the light was red, stopped before the STOP line. More surprising was to see all pedestrians neatly lined up waiting for the proper light combination for them to cross the road. For a moment I thought I'd reached Bombay.

The traffic sense in Hyderabad seems to be improving by leaps and bounds, thanks to the efforts of the Traffic Police. I'm sure they must be as surprised to realise that all they needed to do was install traffic lights and fine violators to get people to behave.

Talking of fines, I got one for asking directions from a traffic policeman while not wearing a seat-belt. I expected the guy to ask for a bribe and was again very pleasantly surprised when he took out his little book and wrote me a proper ticket. Paying up did pinch a bit as I'd just driven 20 feet before encountering the TP, but I was happy to pay it since it promised a better driving experience in this city, which is something I've wanted for a long time.

But how many of you are there in India, who are ready to take the ticket rather than bribe the policeman? Thats probably whats still keeping India a developing country.

What a terrible loss this will be to fellow travellers who will miss the swearing to yourself string of profanity brought out by frustration at the bad traffic.
